The trailer for the Hunger Games has been released, and I have two things to say.
One, Jennifer Lawrence is not olive in the most generous of terms. So the debate about whether or not Katniss was a white woman with olive skin or a WOC with olive skin seems pretty silly since they cast a white woman without an olive complexion. Seriously!
I admit, I wouldn't have been happy if they brown-ed her up for the role, but I find it a bit ridiculous that (especially in the larger reaping scene) how much color has been erased from a film. Especially a film about a post-apocolayptic society with opportunity for diversity through direct textual interpretation (as opposed to artistic license). It's a bit ridiculous.
Two, the movie looks really entertaining. I want to see it! But I don't want to support the white-washing. It also hurts my heart that much more that they didn't bother to even consider a single actress of color for the role. Yes, Lawrence is a good actress. But it makes me sad to know that this movie could have been that entertaining, that huge, and that fantastic with a woman of color in the lead role.
To see or not to see? I am torn.
