Race!fail in The Hunger Games is another excellent post about race in THG. It's a very concise but telling read that goes throw the characteristics of the (undeniable/unambiguous) POCs in the book: Rue, Thresh and Chaff. I admit, even I didn't remember Chaff having devoured the three books in a week.
This article is interesting for two reasons:
1) It is the best argument I have seen, BY FAR, for why Katniss is not a POC. Because none of the POCs in the book are nuanced or are much more than stereotypes or used in stereotypical ways. If she is so dedicated to having a protagonist of color, why did she let all the other characters of color fall by the wayside?
2) After reading this, I don't think anyone can deny that Katniss being a POC would seriously change how this book is read. If Katniss is a POC that means that Collins DOES have one nuanced, important character who fulfills much more than a stereotypical role. If she is a POC, then the world of the future is populated by more than white people and stereotypes. If she is white, then THG really is one big appropriating race fail and totally disappointing.
Check out this post. Tell me what you think.
